One of the questions salon owners always want to know is how to increase sales? And as gel manicures have become more popular (see Nails Magazine 2013-2014 Industry Reporthow to increase gel manicure sales and differentiate their offering from the competition?  Although there are many different ways to approach this question here is how one salon has been successful.

Ocean View Nails is a small family-owned salon located in San Clemente, California. They use CND Shellac for gel manicures and over the course of the last year the salon’s gel manicure business has been steadily growing. The salon has built a solid reputation in the area for providing quality gel manicures with excellent service.  

As gel manicures have become more popular guests would ask the owner and technicians more and more about the process and potential effect of the ultraviolet (UV) rays to increase their risk for skin cancer. Each gel manicure process requires the guest to place their hands in a UV lamp for a total of 6-8 minutes to cure or dry the gel polish.

The owner began doing research and discovered that there was a ton of information discussing the topic but it was confusing and seemed inconclusive on whether it was an issue.  

After discussing the best approach with technicians and doing some further research the salon purchased 30 pairs of the UV Shield Glove TM and began offering them complementary with every gel manicure service.

The feedback was immediate both in guest’s increased level of satisfaction and a noticeable increase in sales. After using the gloves for about one month the number of gel manicures the salon performed were steadily increasing.

Since introduction of the gloves in August 2013 the salon has averaged a year-over-year increase in gel manicures of over 40% compared to the previous year. In addition to the increase in sales, the gloves provide their guests “peace of mind” and a differentiator for the salon in a highly competitive market.
